Print a pattern at actual size

How to print a PDF pattern at 100 % and check it with the test square.

Every one of our pattern PDFs carries a 1-inch test square. If that square measures one inch, every template on the page is at true size. If it does not, nothing else on the page can be trusted, so check it first.

How to print

  1. Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader, Apple Preview, or your browser.
  2. In the print dialog choose Actual size or 100 %. Turn off Fit to page and Shrink to fit.
  3. Print one page with a test square and measure it with a ruler.
  4. Choose the Letter pages in the US and the A4 pages elsewhere. Both sets are in every pattern.

If the square is wrong

The usual cause is a scaling setting in the printer driver rather than the PDF reader. Look for page scaling or auto-rotate and center and set it to none, then print the test page again.
